Missing Nagaswaram

 By PNV Ram

An early highlight of last year’s Chennai music season was the mellow nayanam purveyed by Vyasarpadi Kothandaraman at the Music Academy on the first morning of the festival there. Eagerly scanning the announcements for this season, I found that Kothandaraman had a record number of concert engagements for this season—exactly zero. I consider him one of the best nagaswaram vidwans around today and it made me sad to note his absence from the list of performers, but I had yet another shock awaiting me. The brilliant maestro Injikkudi EM Subramaniam has only one performance this season, unless I am missing out on concerts announced elsewhere.

Anyone who has heard these wonderful instrumentalists will know that they represent the best of an almost bygone tradition of temple music, which they have striven to preserve intact against all odds, with their would-be successors moving to other, securer occupations, and audiences dwindling more rapidly than sparrows from our environment.

Sruti and The Music Forum, Chennai, quickly moved in and invited Kothandaraman to offer a demonstration of the manodharma relating to Todi raga in all its grandeur during the Lec-Dem Mela being co-presented by them during 10-12 December 2011 at the Arkay Convention Centre on Royapettah High Road, near Luz Corner. Please see the whole programme below.
